Columbia Seeks TDOT Partnership for Long-Awaited Bear Creek Pike Expansion

The Columbia City Council is once again seeking a partnership with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) to advance the long-delayed Bear Creek Pike widening project. The plan aims to expand 7.2 miles of the road from U.S. Highway 31 to the Interstate 65 interchange, which is currently undergoing a $29 million upgrade.

The Bear Creek project has faced numerous setbacks over the years, including new legal requirements for roadway projects, such as additional right-of-way acquisition procedures that were not in place when the project was initially approved. Despite these challenges, council members voted on Thursday to reapply for a partnership with TDOT, hoping to secure an updated design and begin construction in the coming years.

The city’s previous attempt to secure TDOT funding in 2023 was unsuccessful, despite committing $4.5 million and requesting $10 million over 10 years. However, city officials remain determined to push the project forward.

Resident concerns have been raised about specific safety issues along Bear Creek Pike, such as the left turn lane out of McDonald's near the U.S. 31 intersection, which poses a hazard to drivers. City officials have acknowledged these concerns and plan to address them as the project progresses.

City Engineer Glenn Harper explained that recent changes in right-of-way acquisition requirements have contributed to the project's delays, adding up to 24 months to the timeline due to the appraisal process. The project will also involve eliminating concrete medians that allow left turns, potentially disrupting traffic during construction.

Harper noted that while the project is fully funded for construction, the involvement of state and federal funds has complicated the process, contributing to ongoing delays.
