Tighter Regulations for Short-Term Rentals Leave AirBnB Owners Frustrated
Property owners in Maury County who have invested in short-term rentals are expressing concern over the increased enforcement of regulations and the potential for new restrictions. Since July 2022, Columbia’s zoning regulations have permitted short-term rentals within owner-occupied homes and certain mixed-use areas. However, local authorities have identified cases where some property owners have failed to comply with these zoning laws.
Residents in established neighborhoods have raised concerns about the impact of short-term rentals on their communities. In response, officials have ramped up enforcement efforts, which has led to pushback from some rental property owners. One such owner, Suzanne Roberts, operates a triplex listed on Airbnb and was informed through a certified letter that short-term rentals in certain areas are no longer allowed.
Roberts has been managing her Airbnb for the past three years, hosting a variety of guests from across the United States, including wedding parties and softball teams, as well as international visitors. For Roberts and her family, the rental property has provided a valuable source of additional income.
Despite these benefits, some residents argue that short-term rentals have not caused the community problems they are often associated with. According to Roberts, her guests are respectful, and her Airbnb follows strict house rules. She feels that short-term rentals, like hers, are being unfairly targeted by the city's crackdown.
To address these ongoing issues, the city’s planning and zoning department is organizing a public forum on Wednesday, October 23, at city hall. The meeting will focus on discussing appropriate locations, limits, and policies for short-term rentals. Roberts plans to attend the forum, hoping to advocate for responsible growth in Columbia and to support local businesses, while expressing concerns that well-intentioned property owners may be penalized in the process.
Saturday: Celebrate Bradley Mountain’s One Year Brick & Mortar Anniversary

Come celebrate Bradley Mountain’s 1 year brick and mortar anniversary at their new Columbia headquarters! The company that began in 2012 is known for their incredibly durable bags and jackets – so durable you may even pass them down to the next generation. They’ve created their dream home in the arts district: “a retail store where you can drink coffee or beer, and maybe hear some live music while you shop.”
There will be live music by Codetta South on Saturday, as well as a flower pressing station with Faire Flower Ranch and ceramics and other home goods by Yucca Society.
1202 S. Garden St., Columbia
🚨 Tonight: THP Sobriety Checkpoint
The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting sobriety roadside safety checkpoints during the week of August 16th on State Route 50 East, .2 Miles East of the 19 mile marker in Maury County starting at 10:00PM.
Impaired driving is a serious crime that kills more than 16,000 people and injures 305,000 people every year in the United States. Troopers will evaluate drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment. Troopers will target those who operate a vehicle while impaired and take corrective actions for other violations observed while ensuring the protection of all motorists.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol recognizes that sobriety checkpoints are highly visible and effective tools in the battle against impaired driving.
