Columbia Academy Grad Kavares Tears is Selected by Padres in MLB Draft

Columbia Academy graduate Kavares Tears was recently selected by the San Diego Padres in the Major League Baseball Draft, making him the 134th overall pick. He is the first Columbia Academy athlete to be selected in the MLB Draft since 1995.

Tears was the sixth member of the national champion University of Tennessee team to be picked in the first four rounds. The Vols had an impressive draft presence, with numerous players selected over the three-day event, showcasing the strength of the program under coach Tony Vitello.

Tears emerged as a standout player during Tennessee's 2024 season, having recorded just 56 at-bats before this breakout year. After redshirting his freshman year and serving as a bench player in his redshirt freshman season, Tears shined as a full-time starter. He hit .324 with 20 home runs, 37 extra-base hits, and 62 RBIs.

A native of Lewisburg, Tennessee, Tears showcased impressive power at the plate and ranked second on the Vols with 45 walks last season. His defensive improvement over his college career was notable. Initially without a defined position, he evolved into an elite right fielder by his junior year, earning a spot on the SEC All-Defensive Team. He also demonstrated versatility by excelling in center field when needed.

Tears' redshirt sophomore season was marked by clutch performances, including a pivotal double in the College World Series finals that drove in the game-deciding run. His selection makes him the sixth Tennessee player chosen in the 2024 MLB Draft, joining teammates Christian Moore, Blake Burke, Billy Amick, Dylan Dreiling, and Drew Beam.

From New Orleans to Columbia: The Heartwarming Story Behind River Terrace

Nestled along the picturesque Duck River, the River Terrace Restaurant at 1000 Riverside Drive has become a beloved dining destination in Columbia. This culinary gem, established 14 years ago, has a heartwarming origin story.

Elizabeth Parks Landry had just purchased a new home in New Orleans five days prior to Hurricane Katrina. Her new home, the home she was selling, her rental property, and mother’s home had all flooded. Not wanting to risk going through another major hurricane and thinking toward eventual small-town retirement, Elizabeth decided after a lifetime of living in New Orleans, to relocate.

She fell in love with Columbia after making a two-week trek across the southeast, exploring various areas. When Elizabeth had been viewing homes in the area, she had asked numerous local people at that time where there were some upscale restaurants to have a nice dinner. Without fail, every single individual asked named another town altogether instead of any local restaurant. That sparked the idea for a niche to be filled and the River Terrace was born. It has thrived ever since.

Enjoy the views of the Duck River while you dine at River Terrace.

River Terrace prides itself on its unique, made-from-scratch cuisine, drawing from the rich culinary traditions of New Orleans. The menu features original recipes that highlight the art of French-based cooking, emphasizing sauces and seasonings that enhance flavor without overwhelming the palate. Each dish is prepared fresh to order, ensuring an exceptional dining experience every time.

The ambiance at River Terrace is unmatched, offering a serene and beautiful setting that overlooks the Duck River. This idyllic location provides the perfect backdrop for any meal, from intimate dinners to celebratory gatherings. Unlike many other venues, River Terrace does not charge a room rental fee for private parties, regardless of size, making it an ideal choice for special events.

In addition to its culinary offerings, River Terrace is committed to fostering community connections. The restaurant has recently introduced a series of monthly Mix & Mingle events, designed to bring people together in a meaningful way. These events include Newcomers Night, Singles Night, and Seniors Night, each catering to different groups within the community. Newcomers Night helps those new to Columbia make friends and connections, Singles Night offers romantic opportunities, and Seniors Night provides a space for those 60 and older to find companionship.

“I had become aware over the years of numerous people in each of these categories repeatedly lamenting the lack of opportunities to meet people, and felt that offering this series of events at essentially simply my cost of the food provided for them, would serve a community need, and have always been about giving back when I can out of gratitude for the multitude of blessings I've been fortunate enough to receive throughout my own life. It took me close to 2 years of thinking about how to pull together this concept to work out all the details of how to do so and initiate it, and I've been thrilled to just recently put it into action and at how well it's been received by the attendees at the first two that we have had thus far, with our third one coming up at the end of this month.”
