Maury County Commission Approves 2024-2025 Budget with Increased Funding for Firefighters

The Maury County Commission adopted its 2024-2025 fiscal budget last month, following extensive discussions and amendments for additional firefighters and disaster relief due to the May tornado. The full commission convened at its regular meeting, which also included updates to certain nonprofit funding.
The initially proposed General Budget was estimated at around $50.4 million, but other funding considerations were made prior to adoption. District 6 Commissioner Cindy Hestla proposed adding $400,056 to fund six new full-time Maury County firefighters. This amendment passed with a 12-9 vote, increasing the general fund to $50,806,520.
Maury County Public Schools will receive $154,275,178 in general purpose funds and an additional $10,830,320 in food service funds.
The budget was ultimately approved in an 18-3 vote, but this was just the beginning of the June 17 discussion. Following the budget item, the commission addressed the county's tax levy, or property taxes owed.
The county's tax rate stands at $1.91 per $100 of taxable property, funding the General Fund, schools, solid waste, parks & recreation, highways, and capital projects. While the rates remain unchanged, the allocation of funds to these entities will differ.
District 5 Commissioner Scott Sumners, who replaced Vincent Fuqua earlier this year, suggested moving three pennies from the Debt Service Fund to the General Fund to replenish it after the disaster. This motion passed 20-1. The Debt Service Fund previously received $0.36 of the tax rate, while the General Fund received $0.52; the amendment increased the General Fund to $0.55.
Additionally, District 8 Commissioner Ray Jeter proposed moving $0.05 from the Debt Service Fund to the Highway Fund, which currently receives $0.09. This would amount to over $2 million. Maury County Finance Director Doug Lukonen cautioned that this move might not make a significant impact on highway maintenance, which is planned over a five-year period. The amendment ultimately failed in a 10-11 vote.
Local Business Spotlight: The Hustle Factory Girl’s Volleyball Club 🏐

Are you looking for a place where young athletes can grow not only in their volleyball skills but also as individuals? Discover Hustle Factory Volleyball Club (HFVC).
Located at Hustle Factory Sports Complex in Spring Hill and their new branch in Columbia, HFVC offers an inclusive environment for girls ages 7-18 to thrive both on and off the court.
Founded in 2022 by Tim Cooper, HFVC aims to inspire and challenge players, fostering growth in all aspects of life. Tim’s extensive background, including playing and coaching volleyball for nearly a decade, informs the club’s holistic approach. His experiences range from coaching beginners to college athletes and even leading teams in international competitions in Thailand and West Africa.
“Our club is distinctive from other volleyball and youth sports clubs in that we are focused on the individuals holistic development. While developing their athletic skills is a priority for our club it does not override the importance of character development and helping them to mature into kind, responsible and confident adults. We believe that a coach is able to connect with young athletes in a way parents, teachers and peers cannot. Our coaches are trained and encouraged to look for teachable moments and to develop healthy coach/player relationships throughout the season.”

The club offers a variety of opportunities to get involved:
Seasonal Leagues: Fall, Winter, and Spring leagues cater to beginners and those new to volleyball.
Summer Camps: Available for all skill levels, these camps are perfect for honing volleyball skills in a fun, supportive environment.
Private Lessons: Personalized coaching sessions with experienced trainers.
Travel Teams: Competitive play through club teams and travel seasons.
Exciting news: HFVC is expanding with a new branch in Columbia at the Macedonia Recreation Center with hopes this will be closer to those communities without a volleyball club near them such as Pulaski, Hohenwald, etc.
Don’t miss the upcoming Fall League starting on August 12th in Spring Hill and August 15th in Columbia. Spots are limited, so be sure to register soon!
