Mark Your Calendar: Tennessee’s Tax-Free Weekend is Coming

Tennessee's sales tax holiday is approaching, allowing residents to save on eligible items before the school year begins. Although Tennessee doesn't have an individual income tax, it ranks high in state and local sales tax rates, with a general state tax rate of 7% and an average combined rate of 9.55%. This makes Tennessee the state with the second highest average combined state and local sales tax rates, according to the Tax Foundation.

From Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28, 2024, Tennesseans can save on eligible computers, school supplies, and clothing both online and in-store. Items individually priced at $100 or less are eligible, while those over $100 are not. Items sold together cannot be split to stay under the $100 limit.

The tax-free weekend begins on the last Friday in July at 12:01 a.m. and ends at 11:59 p.m. the following Sunday. In 2024, this will be from July 26 to July 28. Stores selling eligible items such as clothing, school supplies, and computers participate in the sales tax holiday, while those selling only to businesses or non-qualifying items do not have to participate.

Eligible clothing includes… shirts, dresses, pants, coats, gloves, mittens, hats, hosiery, neckties, belts, sneakers, shoes, uniforms (both athletic and non-athletic), and scarves. Non-eligible clothing includes separately sold belt buckles, patches, emblems, sewing supplies, clothing accessories, protective equipment, and sports or recreational equipment.

Eligible school supplies include… binders, book bags, calculators, tape, chalk, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, pens, pencils, lunch boxes, notebooks, paper, rulers, scissors, and art supplies like clay, glazes, paints, paintbrushes, sketch pads, and watercolors. Non-eligible school supplies include instructional materials and computer supplies.

Eligible computers must be purchased as a complete processing unit, including a monitor, keyboard, mouse, cables, and preloaded software. Non-eligible computer items include separately sold monitors, keyboards, speakers, scanners, software not part of a preloaded package, storage media, handheld schedulers, personal digital assistants, e-readers, video game consoles, computer printers, and printer supplies like paper and ink.

Columbia 101: New Initiative Connects Residents with Local Government

The City of Columbia is pleased to announce the launch of Columbia 101, an innovative program designed to engage residents with local government and community services. Participants in Columbia 101 will have the unique opportunity to interact closely with city officials and staff, gaining firsthand knowledge of how municipal services are delivered and learning about avenues for community involvement and advocacy.

This consecutive two-day program will be open to all City of Columbia and Maury County residents and will be offered twice per year, with the official kick-off occurring on September 17th and September 18th. Participants can expect to begin each day at City Hall before learning more about all 12 city departments and touring select city facilities, such as the Fire & Rescue and Public Works Departments.

Applications for Columbia 101 are available now and will close on Friday, August 9th at 4:00 pm. Learn more and apply today here.
