Strawberry Moon to Mark Summer's Arrival on June 21

June's full moon, known as the Strawberry Moon, is set to appear the day after the 2024 summer solstice, the first official day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Because it occurs so close to the solstice, the moon will appear larger and potentially more colorful, though not the strawberry red its name suggests.
The Strawberry Moon will reach its peak illumination at 9:08 p.m. on Friday, June 21, 2024. However, the moon will appear full for three consecutive evenings, from Thursday evening to early Sunday morning, according to NASA.
The name "Strawberry Moon" is tied to the seasonality of the moon. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, Native American tribes such as the Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota named the moon after the June-bearing strawberries that were ready to be harvested in the northeastern United States.
The summer solstice, marking the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, falls on Thursday, June 20, 2024. This day features the longest period of daylight, as the North Pole reaches its maximum tilt toward the Sun, resulting in the longest day and shortest night of the year. On this day, there will be 14 hours, 53 minutes, and 42.5 seconds of sunlight, according to NASA.
Due to its low position in the sky, the full moon will appear larger than usual, a phenomenon known as the "Moon Illusion." Additionally, the moon will have a colorful appearance, particularly on the evening of June 21, when it will rise in the southeast just after sunset, appearing large and golden-hued.
Clear and warm weather is expected across the state for viewing the full moon. Tennessee state parks are offering special full moon kayaking floats and hikes to enhance the viewing experience. These activities will take place at Indian Mountain State Park (East TN), Henry Horton State Park (Middle TN), and Reelfoot Lake State Park (West TN).
Each full moon has a unique name, derived from Native American traditions. The Maine Farmers' Almanac began publishing these names in the 1930s. The upcoming full moons for 2024 are:
July 21: Buck Moon
August 19: Sturgeon Moon
September 17: Harvest Moon
October 17: Hunter's Moon
November 15: Beaver Moon
December 15: Cold Moon
