Zander Sechrist, who had not seen action in the College World Series in 2021 or 2023, finally took the mound on Wednesday and delivered a standout performance that propelled Tennessee baseball to the brink of its greatest achievement in program history.
Tennessee's victory over Florida State, 7-2, secured their spot in the CWS final at Charles Schwab Field under coach Tony Vitello's seventh season. With a program-record 58 wins this season, surpassing the previous high of 57 wins in 2022, the Vols will face either Texas A&M or Florida in the best-of-three final series starting Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Early defensive heroics from Tennessee's outfield, including a crucial catch by Kavares Tears and Dylan Dreiling colliding with the wall for an out, supported Sechrist's efforts. The infield, initially shaky, showcased its skill in the third inning when shortstop Dean Curley's defensive play halted FSU's momentum, helping Sechrist navigate through potential threats.
Tennessee capitalized on early opportunities with the first five batters reaching base, translating into a 3-0 lead that proved decisive. Contributions from Christian Moore, Blake Burke, Billy Amick, Dylan Dreiling, and Hunter Ensley set the tone, bolstered by aggressive baserunning and opportunistic scoring, including an additional run from an errant pickoff throw.
The Vols' victory marks their first appearance in the CWS finals since 1951 and the first finals appearance for a No. 1 national seed since 2009, positioning them for a historic opportunity to claim the national championship.
Teens Charged After String of Pellet Gun Incidents in Spring Hill

Credit: Spring Hill Police Dept.
Police have apprehended multiple suspects following incidents of individuals being shot with a pellet gun in the Spring Hill area on Monday. According to authorities, two 16-year-old boys, one from Spring Hill and another from Franklin, have been arrested and charged with aggravated assault in Williamson County Juvenile Court in connection to the attacks. Police indicated that initial findings suggest the teens used "Orbeez" guns or gel blasters during the incidents.
The Spring Hill Police Department became involved after receiving reports of a woman being shot in the leg by someone in a silver SUV that was passing by on Duplex Road near Cochran Trace Drive around 6:30 p.m. The woman informed officers that the gun had an orange/yellow tip at the end of its barrel.
Later at 6:50 p.m., three individuals riding in a golf cart were also targeted by a pellet gun from within a passing silver SUV on Miles Johnson Parkway near Wilkes Lane. All three victims reported being struck by projectiles when police arrived on the scene.
Approximately 30 minutes after the golf cart incident, another woman was hit by a projectile from a pellet gun while walking in the Wilkerson Place neighborhood near Lequire Lane and Callberry Drive. She contacted police at 7:05 p.m. and similarly identified a silver SUV as the vehicle from which the projectile was fired.
“The preliminary investigation to this point has revealed that juveniles have been using “Orbeez” guns that shoot gel projectiles (gel blasters),” Spring Hill PD said in a release. “Some are shooting these guns from car to car at each other, while others shoot at pedestrians. In other cases, BB/pellet guns have been used by juveniles and persons walking/driving have been hit.
Parents, if your child has these styles of guns, please monitor their activity especially if they leave the house with them. This investigation is ongoing and more arrests may be coming. This is not a game or social media ‘challenge.’ This is a crime, and you will be prosecuted if you are caught.”
