Scorching Heat Wave to Grip Tennessee Through the Week

Tennessee is experiencing its first intense heat wave of the summer, which will continue to affect the state throughout the week. This heat wave is impacting the Northeast, Midwest, and some southern communities, with millions facing extreme temperatures that could reach nearly 100 degrees by week's end. According to a National Weather Service heat risk map, areas from Texas to Maine, including Tennessee, are expected to endure several days of temperatures exceeding 90 degrees.

The ongoing heat wave has led to questions about the potential influence of a heat dome, a phenomenon where a persistent high-pressure area traps heat over a region for an extended period. This term, though not a scientific one, has become more common in recent years. The American Meteorological Society explains that this condition can lead to significantly higher temperatures. Northern Tennessee lies on the edge of this heat dome, which currently covers much of the Northeast and Midwest.

With temperatures in Tennessee approaching triple digits, it is crucial to exercise caution when spending time outdoors, particularly for the very young and the elderly.

Extreme heat can hinder the body's ability to maintain a normal temperature, leading to various health conditions. Two common risks during high heat are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Here are the differences between these conditions as explained by the CDC:

What was the hottest day in Tennessee?

The hottest days on record in Tennessee occurred in 1930, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Perryville, Tennessee, reached a scorching 113 degrees on both July 29 and August 9 of that year.

VetFest Returns to Nashville

Credit: Bob Woodruff Foundation

For the third consecutive year, Bob Woodruff’s VetFest is coming back to Nashville to show appreciation for local veterans.

In 2006, Woodruff nearly lost his life while reporting from an Iraqi tank when an IED exploded. He survived a 36-day coma and underwent years of recovery. His experience motivated him to ensure that the physical and mental care he received is accessible to all veterans.

Woodruff’s VetFest will return to Nashville on Saturday, June 22, at the Skydeck on Broadway. Woodruff has emphasized Nashville's strong veteran community and the therapeutic power of music in recovery.

This year’s VetFest will feature performances by artists such as Ashley McBryde, Maddie and Tae, Michael Warren, and Lucinda Williams.

The event will begin at 4 p.m. at the Skydeck on Broadway, located at 5055 Broadway.

Tickets must be reserved in advance and are available here. You can find more information about this event, here.
