Tennessee Dominates UNC 6-1 in Historic College World Series Win

Tennessee secured another victory in the College World Series, defeating UNC 6-1 at Charles Schwab Field on Sunday. This marks the first time in program history that Tennessee has won its first two games in the College World Series, a significant achievement considering their last double-win in the CWS was back in 2001.

With a record of 57-12, the Vols will face the winner of the UNC (48-15) vs. Florida State (48-16) matchup on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN. UNC and FSU will first meet in an elimination game on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Tennessee has now set a program record of 57 wins for the second time in the past three seasons.

Drew Beam started the game impressively by striking out UNC's Vance Honeycutt and Casey Cook in quick succession. He maintained control throughout, throwing 25 of his first 27 pitches for strikes and showcasing his best form over the first five innings. Beam ultimately struck out seven batters, allowing only one run on four hits and two walks before being relieved in the sixth inning.

Offensively, Kavares Tears and Reese Chapman played pivotal roles, each contributing with key home runs — Tears with a three-run shot in the fourth inning and Chapman with a solo homer in the fifth. Tears continued his strong performance with an RBI double in the eighth inning, adding to his impactful contributions in the College World Series.

Kirby Connell replaced Beam in the sixth inning under pressure from UNC, managing to minimize damage after they had two runners on base with no outs. Connell efficiently got a groundout and executed a double play to end the inning unscathed, ultimately striking out two batters and allowing just one hit over two innings.

Tears' three-run homer in this game marked his 20th of the season, making him the fourth Vol to achieve this milestone. Tennessee's achievement of having four players with 20 or more home runs in a season places them as only the second team in NCAA history to accomplish this feat, following Alabama in 1997.

This season, Tennessee has hit a total of 177 home runs, including four in the current College World Series, showcasing their formidable offensive firepower throughout the year.
