The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation issued an Ozone Code Orange Air Quality Alert for the Nashville area on Thursday, June 13. The Tennessee Air Quality Forecast Program reports that ozone levels are increasing due to warm and sunny weather conditions, coupled with minimal wind and low humidity. These conditions facilitate the accumulation of pollutants in the atmosphere, which then react with sunlight to produce ground-level ozone.

Ground-level ozone, identified as the main component of smog by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is a harmful air pollutant with adverse effects on both people and the environment. The Ozone Code Orange alert indicates that vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, and individuals with asthma may experience health issues, although the general public is less likely to be affected.

The weather conditions in the greater Nashville area on Friday, June 14, are expected to keep ozone levels within the Orange level. Those with lung disease, children, older adults, and active individuals are advised to limit prolonged outdoor activities or strenuous outdoor exertion.

Air quality alerts are designed to inform the public about pollution levels and advise vulnerable groups to take necessary precautions. The Air Quality Index (AQI), established by the EPA, is used to monitor and report air quality. The AQI tracks five major air pollutants: ground-level ozone, particle pollution, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.

The AQI values range from 0 to 500, with higher values indicating greater air pollution and health concerns. Values at or below 100 are generally satisfactory, but values above 100 signify unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups. As values increase, health risks escalate for everyone. The AQI is categorized into six levels: good (green), moderate (yellow), unhealthy for sensitive groups (orange), unhealthy (red), very unhealthy (purple), and hazardous (maroon), each representing different health concerns.

Depending on exposure levels, ozone can lead to coughing, sore or scratchy throat, difficulty breathing deeply, inflamed and damaged airways, increased susceptibility to lung infections, aggravated lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis, and more frequent asthma attacks.
