Tennessee secured its seventh College World Series appearance with a decisive 12-1 victory over Evansville on Sunday. This achievement marks Tony Vitello’s third trip to Nebraska in four years.
The Vols have an impressive 5-1 record in Super Regionals and have had a notable season, not just due to their advancement to Omaha but also because of the team's performance and mindset. Vitello emphasized this success to the media following the win.
Tennessee will face Florida State at 7 p.m. on Friday in their opening game of the College World Series.
Columbia City Council to Decide on Budget, Tax Rate, and Pay Increases
Columbia elected officials are nearing the final stages of approving the city's annual budget, which amounts to approximately $75.8 million for the 2024-25 fiscal year and includes a 5% raise for city employees. The Columbia City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposed budget at its regular meeting on June 13. This session will also address items such as setting the city's tax rate and employee compensation plans.
The current tax rate for all taxable property in Columbia is expected to remain at $0.8251 per $100 of assessed value. During a recent meeting, council members discussed potential budget amendments that could provide additional funding to certain civil organizations.
One such request came from the South Central Resource Agency, which sought an additional $1,000 for a grant match with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to support the Meals on Wheels program. Additionally, Maury County Animal Services is seeking to expand its animal shelter, necessitating further funding.
Mayor Chaz Molder emphasized the importance of supporting the animal shelter due to Columbia's significant utilization of its services. The city currently allocates $50,000 quarterly, or $200,000 annually, to the shelter. Molder proposed a 10% increase in this allotment, amounting to an additional $20,000 per year. He noted that Mt. Pleasant has already committed an additional $7,000 annually to the shelter.
The council will vote on these proposed amendments and funding increases before voting on the overall budget. The meeting will take place at City Hall on Thursday, June 13, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday: Monthly Chamber Coffee
