New Turf for Columbia Central High Football Field Approved by School Board

White hashmark lines down the sideline of a green football field.

The Columbia Central High School football field will soon have artificial turf following a decision by the Maury County School Board. The board approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the county Parks and Recreation Department to install turf and rent out the football field at Central High School.

This agreement provides the necessary funds to install artificial turf at Lindsey Nelson Football Stadium, near Columbia Central High School. The school board will be responsible for replacing the turf every 10 years, while the parks department will handle all maintenance.

The school board will have first priority for events and games at the stadium, though the parks department can rent it to third parties with the board's approval.

The measure passed despite dissent from Board Members Michael Fulbright and Justin Haucke. Fulbright expressed concerns about the board being asked to accommodate the county's needs without reciprocation. Board Chair Will Sims supported the measure, highlighting the parks department's positive track record in maintaining the field, thus relieving the school board of that responsibility.

Haucke raised concerns about the potential presence of "forever chemicals" in artificial turf and expressed a preference for real grass fields. Ultimately, the board approved the memorandum, allowing for the installation of synthetic fields for baseball, football, and softball near Central High School. Haucke cast the sole dissenting vote.
