Maury County Historical Society Installs Time Capsule at New Judicial Center

Earlier this year, the Maury County Historical Society (MCHS) announced plans to install a time capsule at the new Maury County Judicial Center, coinciding with the facility's final construction phases. MCHS President Eric Previti explained that the project aims to preserve the county's rich history while marking the beginning of a new era with the judicial center.
The time capsule was placed in the new building, located on the former Daily Herald property on South Main Street, on Friday morning. Scheduled to be reopened on June 1, 2124, the capsule weighs about 100 pounds and is made of fortified steel, constructed by Columbia Machine Works. The exterior features engraved plaques recognizing key contributors to the project, including the Historical Society board members, the new Judicial Center, and Columbia Machine Works employees.
Jake Langston, Vice President of Columbia Machine Works, noted the significance of the company's long-standing presence in Columbia and expressed appreciation for the Historical Society and local officials. The capsule, specially designed to endure its 100-year timeline, addresses lessons learned from a previous capsule placed in 1904, which suffered damage due to rainwater infiltration.
The capsule's contents include a range of current and historical items, such as letters from local officials, photographs, and archival documents. It also holds several commemorative flags, including a Maury County flag flown over the courthouse, two U.S. flags flown over the White House and State Capitol, and city flags from Columbia, Spring Hill, and Mt. Pleasant. Additionally, Mt. Pleasant contributed a special key to the city.
Memorials for Mary Susan Kennedy and Cheryl Lovett are also included in the capsule. Kennedy, the wife of WKRM owner Delk Kennedy, passed away in May, while Lovett was the sole victim of a recent EF-3 tornado in Columbia. The capsule also contains the lyrics and a state resolution for Makky Kaylor's song "Tennessee, In My Dreams," which was recently declared an official Tennessee State Song, one of only 14 to receive this status in the state's history.

This Week: CMA Fest in Nashville

A few miles up the road, the top country artists will be performing at CMA Fest this week!
The Ultimate Country Music Fan Experience™ began in 1972 as Fan Fair®, which drew 5,000 fans to Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium. The legendary CMA Fest has become the city’s signature Country Music event that hosts tens of thousands of fans from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and 39 international countries. It is also the longest-running Country Music festival in the world!
Since 2006, a portion of proceeds from CMA Fest has been given to music education initiatives supporting students K-12 across the U.S. through the CMA Foundation. It’s thanks to the fans, as well as event partners and the generosity of artists donating their time that they’ve been able to give back to deserving educators and students.
