Spring Hill to Celebrate Opening of New June Lake Interchange
The new I-65 Buckner Road Interchange in Spring Hill, a project initiated in 2020, is nearing completion, with celebrations planned for the end of this month.
City of Spring Hill leaders, along with state officials, will officially mark the grand opening of the new June Lake Interchange. According to TDOT Regional Communications Officer Rebekah Hammond, the tentative opening date is set for May 31.
A key feature of this project is the "Diverging Diamond Interchange," which is the second of its kind in Tennessee. This design aims to improve traffic flow to and from I-65.
Before this project, Spring Hill had only one access point to I-65 via the Saturn Parkway Exit. The new interchange at Buckner Road will provide a second access point, enhancing traffic flow to new developments in the area.
The I-65 Interchange will offer direct access to the June Lake Development along Buckner Lane. June Lake is a mixed-use development that will include 3.9 million square feet of commercial office space, 1.3 million square feet of retail and restaurant space, 2,900 homes, and 400 hotel rooms.
The Buckner Road Interchange project began in 2020 with a Request for Qualification. In 2021, the contract was awarded to Bell Construction.
Tennessee's Brood XIX Cicadas to Quiet Down Soon

Had enough of the cicadas yet? Fortunately, the noise should start to decrease soon.
For the past month, communities in Tennessee have been inundated with the sounds of Brood XIX cicadas, which have been emerging early in hopes of attracting mates. Although the brood wasn't expected until mid-May, sightings began in early May across Middle Tennessee.
The 13-year cicadas are expected to remain until mid-June, with some possibly lingering until July, depending on their emergence time. These cicadas typically live about five weeks above ground, with some species lasting only three to four weeks. During this period, they mate, and female cicadas lay eggs in trees. These eggs then fall to the ground and burrow for another 13 years.
The simultaneous emergence of two cicada broods is a rare event. According to the University of Connecticut, the last time this happened was in 1803. This year marks the first time since 2015 that a 13-year brood will emerge in the same year as a 17-year brood. It is also the first time since 1998 that adjacent 13 and 17-year broods will emerge together. Specifically, Brood XIX in Tennessee and Brood XIII in the Midwest are co-emerging for the first time since 1803.
Cicadas are not harmful to humans or pets and do not bite or sting. However, they can pierce and suck as part of their feeding process, as reported by Cicadamania.
These insects are found on all continents except Antarctica, inhabiting deserts, forests, and urban areas. While the South is accustomed to the sound of annual cicadas during summer, broods like Brood XIX are periodical cicadas, appearing only every 13 years.
