Maury County Animal Services at Capacity with Nearly 300 Animals

Animal shelters across Middle Tennessee are struggling with overcrowding, and in Maury County, the situation has worsened since the tornado two weeks ago.

Maury County Animal Services is experiencing an unprecedented surge in homeless pets and is urgently seeking public assistance. The shelter is taking in more animals than it has the space to accommodate, operating with just 56 kennels that have been continuously full.

Nearly six months into the year, the shelter is facing record numbers of incoming animals. The tornado has exacerbated the situation, with 288 animals taken in over just 24 days. Approximately 40 of these animals were directly affected by the tornado, with 30 believed to be displaced by the storm.

Overcrowding is also attributed to a high number of unwanted litters and pet surrenders. The shelter is continuously working to manage the influx, often having to double up kennels, which compromises the standard of care. Efforts include reaching out to rescues, facilitating adoptions, and moving animals in and out of the shelter as quickly as possible.

To help mitigate the crisis, Maury County Animal Services is appealing to the public. Adoption fees are set at $75 for dogs and $25 for cats, which include microchipping and spaying or neutering. The shelter needs the community's support to provide these animals with the care and homes they deserve.
