Columbia Tornado Victims Prepare For More Storms

Recovery efforts have been ongoing since the night of May 8, when an EF-3 tornado tore through Maury County.

One of the biggest challenges for recovery groups and crews has been the weather.

Maury County EMA Director Jeff Hardy highlighted the difficulties faced by workers and citizens due to the weather conditions. He mentioned that it has been a long two weeks, with approximately 30% of the county's debris estimated to have been cleared so far.

As Hardy and others brace for another potential round of severe weather, he noted the challenge of managing the current cleanup while preparing for future storms.

Debris piles remain along the roads in the tornado's path, but residents like Sam Barnes acknowledge the significant progress made in just two weeks. Barnes described the initial devastation and expressed gratitude for the help from organizations like Christian Aid Ministries, which have been instrumental in the cleanup efforts. Although he feels blessed to be safe, his thoughts are with community members who have suffered great losses.

With more rain and possible severe weather on the horizon, Barnes and many others are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.

First responders and EMA leaders advise residents to be cautious of the saturated soil, which could weaken already unstable trees and limbs. With wind gusts expected, they also warn those burning debris to be aware of the associated dangers.

Barnes expressed the difficulty of finding normalcy and the ongoing struggle to get answers and complete recovery tasks.
