Are Cicadas Safe For Your Pets?

Step outside and you can’t ignore the persistent sound of millions of cicadas, expected to linger until mid to late June. Many pet owners are curious about whether these insects are safe for pets to consume.

Cicadas are not poisonous and do not bite or sting. However, the American Kennel Club advises pet owners to be cautious, as dogs eating too many cicadas can face digestive problems. The insects' hard exoskeletons and stiff wings can cause issues.

Staff at Williamson County Animal Center (WCAC) provided guidance on what to monitor. They noted that if dogs show interest in live cicadas, owners should watch for signs of vomiting and diarrhea caused by crunching on the insect shells. Cicadas can become softer after rain and humidity, which may lessen the concern, but owners should still be vigilant.

If a dog appears to have consumed an excessive amount of cicadas, WCAC staff recommend contacting a veterinarian for advice.

The Franklin Rodeo is produced by the Franklin Noon Rotary Club and since it began back in 1949, it is billed as one of the longest running charity events in Middle Tennessee and one of the largest rodeos east of the Mississippi!

Over the years, the Rotary has invested rodeo proceeds of over $4 million back into the community. The Franklin Rodeo is sanctioned by the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association) which brings world champion and top ranked contestants to Franklin each year.
