Gov. Lee Signs Bill Granting $2 Billion in Tax Refunds and Cuts for Businesses
Gov. Bill Lee has signed a bill granting businesses nearly $2 billion in tax refunds and annual tax cuts. The period to claim these funds is now open.
The Tennessee Department of Revenue (TDOR) announced that the claim period for the franchise tax began on Wednesday, May 15, with a limited window for filing.
Signed into law by Lee on May 10, the bill removes the property measure from the franchise tax calculation and allows TDOR to issue refunds to qualifying taxpayers. According to TDOR, taxpayers who used Schedule G to pay the franchise tax on the property measure for tax years ending on or after March 31, 2020, and who filed their returns on or after January 1, 2021, are eligible for a refund. Letters have been dispatched to those potentially eligible.
How you can obtain a refund:
Taxpayers must amend their franchise and excise tax returns for all eligible tax periods
File a claim for a refund of franchise tax paid on property measure (Schedule G) form
Both the amended returns and refund claim must be submitted by Nov. 30, 2024
TDOR advises taxpayers to review their records and consult with a tax professional to ascertain their eligibility for a refund, regardless of whether they receive a notification letter. To assist taxpayers, TDOR has set up a website featuring frequently asked questions, a recorded webinar with a demonstration on filing a refund claim, and other helpful resources.
