Which Tennessee County Has Seen The Most Growth? (See Where Maury Ranks in the Top 10)

Tennessee has experienced a notable surge in its population recently, but what county has experienced the most significant growth? Surprisingly, it's not Davidson County, although Nashville remains a magnet for new residents.
For the eighth consecutive year, Rutherford County has claimed the title of the state's fastest-growing county, as revealed by a recent study from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Situated southeast of Nashville, Rutherford County witnessed a 1.8 percent population increase last year, adding 6,419 individuals to reach a total population exceeding 360,000. However, this growth rate was slower than the previous year's 2.7 percent, marking the first time since 2010 that the growth rate dipped below 2 percent.
While Rutherford led in numeric growth, Loudon County experienced the highest percentage increase at 4 percent, followed by Wilson County at 3.2 percent. Maury County secured the ninth position overall, adding 2,764 people between 2022 and 2023.
Remarkably, 90 out of Tennessee's 95 counties observed population growth last year, a significant rise from 72 counties in 2021. This widespread growth hasn't been seen since the mid-1990s, mirroring the period when 91 counties recorded increases, marking the peak growth in state history, according to the university's Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research.
Tennessee ranked fourth among states with the highest number of counties experiencing population increases, with Delaware leading the list, trailed by Florida and Idaho.
Furthermore, rural counties in the state witnessed a notable upswing, with a collective 1.4 percent increase, welcoming 37,416 new residents last year. Among the 78 rural counties, 74 experienced growth, with Wilson and Maury leading the trend.
However, four rural counties experienced declines, with Wayne County's drop attributed to shifting prison populations at the Turney Center Industrial Complex, while the remaining three, located in West Tennessee, have consistently seen declines.
In contrast, Shelby County, the state's largest county, continued its downward trend, losing 6,315 residents last year, a pattern that has persisted since 2012.
Ultium Cells Plants 300 Trees at Spring Hill Facility

Ultium Cells partnered with several organizations to plant 300 trees during Earth Week, creating a green border around its facility, which has been under construction for over two years.
On April 10, volunteer crews began planting 8-foot and 18-foot native shade trees on the berms surrounding the 2.8-million-square-foot building to form a natural buffer between the factory and Highway 31. Native species such as sugar maple, persimmon, blackgum, white oak, poplar, and birch were chosen to promote biodiversity in the area, contributing to a more robust ecosystem by supporting birds, insects, and other organisms. This initiative also aims to enhance the local environment and restore the surrounding landscape.
The tree planting effort extended through Earth Day, when Ultium Cells partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of South Central Tennessee to offer hands-on Earth Day educational activities. Students were taught about the significance of native trees and helped plant approximately 100 smaller trees, providing shade and greenery for future generations.
Chris Desautels, the Plant Director at Ultium Cells' Spring Hill facility, acknowledged the support from the Spring Hill, Columbia, and Maury County communities during the construction process. The tree planting event symbolizes the company's commitment to beautifying its grounds and enhancing local greenery.
Youngduk Kim, Ultium Cells Regional Director, emphasized the company's commitment to sustainability, stating that their battery cells and manufacturing process aim to reduce environmental impact while reinforcing the importance of local initiatives like the tree planting project.
Ultium Cells will continue hiring throughout 2024. Interested candidates can explore open positions and apply online at ultiumcell.com.
