From Roadkill to Funeral Processions: Do You Know These Tennessee Road Laws?
Getting behind the wheel means more than just following the basics of driving. Especially in Tennessee, there are some lesser-known traffic laws you should be aware of before hitting the road.
1.) Keep Your Hands Off Your Phone
Since 2019, Tennessee's "hands-free driving law" has made it illegal for drivers to hold a cellphone while operating a vehicle. This law aims to curb distracted driving by prohibiting activities like texting, watching videos, or recording while driving. The recent "Eddie Conrad Act," effective since January 2024, imposes stricter penalties, particularly targeting those under 18, who could face license suspension for repeat offenses.
2.) Roadkill Meals, Anyone?
Surprisingly, Tennessee law permits consuming "wild game animals" accidentally killed by vehicles. However, there are rules: drivers must notify authorities within 48 hours for certain animals like deer or bears to legally possess the carcass.
3.) Helmets Required for Young Bicyclists
Bicyclists aged 16 and under must wear protective helmets while riding, as mandated by Tennessee law. Additionally, carrying more than one passenger is prohibited unless the bicycle is designed for it.
4.) Move Over for Stationary Vehicles
Tennessee's Move Over law requires drivers to slow down or move over when passing any stationary vehicle displaying flashing hazard lights. Recent legislation increased fines for violations, aiming to enhance safety on the roads.
5.) Leave Your Skunk at Home
Crossing state lines into Tennessee? Remember, it's illegal to import skunks into the state, except for zoos and research facilities, according to state law.
6.) Funeral Processions and Right-of-Way
While it's a common gesture in the South, there's no legal requirement for motorists to pull over for funeral processions. However, drivers must yield the right-of-way to procession vehicles at intersections and refrain from passing or disrupting the procession.
7.) Don't Hog the Left Lane
Tennessee's "Slow Poke Law" prohibits driving in the left passing lane unless overtaking another vehicle. Violators face fines, with exceptions for certain conditions like inclement weather or construction.

Boys & Girls Clubs Hero of the Year Celebration

The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Tennessee are hosting their 3rd annual Spring Hill Hero of the Year Celebration! Presented by Ole South Builders.
Spring Hill community members are competing to be named "Hero of the Year" over a 6-week campaign to raise funds and awareness. We will come together on Thursday, April 25th from 6-8pm at the UAW Hall to enjoy great music, celebrate our youth and name the winner!
The event will feature a songwriters round by Casey Beathard and Monty Criswell, two Grammy nominated songwriters, and introductions of each of our 2024 Hero candidates before we crown the winner.
Tickets are available for $55/person and tables of 10 are available for $500 each. Go here to get tickets.
All funds raised by this event will support Club youth in Spring Hill. Across four locations (Marvin Wright, Spring Hill Elementary, Battle Creek Elementary, and Battle Creek Middle), we currently serve more than 350 youth in Spring Hill each year! Your gift will provide them with life-changing programs around our three priority outcome areas: academic success, healthy lifestyles, and good character & citizenship.
