Spring Hill's Ultium Plant Ships First Battery Cells to General Motors After 2 1/2 Years Work

After two and a half years of effort, Ultium Cells in Spring Hill reached a significant milestone: the first shipment of battery cells to its client, General Motors, was successfully completed.

Chris Desautels, the Plant Director, expressed gratitude towards the various contributors including contractors, community partners, and team members, acknowledging their tireless efforts in bringing this moment to fruition. Desautels also highlighted the exceptional team assembled at Spring Hill and expressed pride in the establishment of a world-class facility.

The expansive facility, along Highway 31 between Spring Hill and Columbia, will continue its production of millions of battery cells for GM’s Ultium Platform electric vehicles. Notably, it will supply battery cells for the Cadillac Lyriq, which is manufactured at GM’s neighboring Spring Hill Assembly plant. The facility is poised to ramp up shipments to other GM plants, with plans to increase both volume and frequency as additional production lines are commissioned.

Youngduk Kim, Regional Director from LG Energy Solution, emphasized the synergistic collaboration between GM’s operational expertise and LG Energy Solution’s cutting-edge battery processes and equipment technology. This partnership aims to deliver top-notch battery cells for General Motors.

Ultium Cells is actively seeking qualified individuals to join its launch team. Interested applicants can find more information about career opportunities at Ultium Cells by visiting their website.

Spring Hill marks Ultium Cells’ second battery cell manufacturing plant to achieve regular production, following the Warren, Ohio plant, which commenced regular production in November 2022. With an estimated cost of $2.6 billion and spanning 2.8 million square feet, the facility is anticipated to reach full operational capacity by 2025, employing up to 1,700 workers.
