Residents Worried Over Duck River's Future Due to Proposal

Earlier this month, the Tennessee Department of Conservation and Environment granted approval for Columbia Power and Water Systems to increase its daily water withdrawal from the Duck River by 32 million gallons, raising concerns among downstream residents about the river's future.

The Duck River has long been celebrated for its rich biodiversity, making it one of the most diverse rivers in the United States. Frustrated residents and landowners gathered in Centerville to express their discontent with the decision.

Gary Baker, a landowner and meeting speaker, raised concerns about the impact of the increased withdrawal, especially considering the existing 20 million gallon withdrawal already in place. Doug Jones, another landowner, criticized the lack of consideration for the river's health during the approval process.

Residents are particularly worried about the river's well-being during low water periods, which are frequent in the summer months and pose a significant threat to aquatic life.

Bill McDonald, a longtime resident, highlighted the Duck River's global recognition for its biodiversity, expressing concern about the potential consequences of increased water withdrawal.

The approval, issued in mid-March, allows for a 30-day appeal period. Another meeting for concerned residents is scheduled for April 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Fairfield Church of Christ in Centerville.

Fun Fact: TN Liquor Stores Are Closed on Easter

In case you didn’t know…

In Tennessee, alcohol sales are prohibited on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter under state law. Previously, the restrictions were even stricter, with alcohol sales banned on Sundays and several federal holidays. However, a law implemented in 2019 amended these regulations, permitting alcohol sales on Sundays as well as on Labor Day, New Year's Day, and the Fourth of July. Despite these changes, Easter continues to be a dry holiday in the state.
