Cash in on Carp: TWRA’s $100 Reward Program for Invasive Carp Removal

Credit: TWRA

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has initiated a program offering a $100 reward for catching invasive carps marked with a tag or band in the Tennessee River and Cumberland River. This initiative aims to manage the proliferation of these fish species in the region.

Partnering with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, TWRA is conducting the silver carp reward tag project to gather insights into the impact and control of invasive carp populations. The data collected will assist biologists in addressing the invasive species issue effectively.

TWRA's fisheries staff will be tagging silver carp in the Kentucky and Barkley Lakes, with approximately 1,000 fish in each lake sporting an external loop tag. Some carp will also have upper jaw bands for identification purposes.

All tags and bands utilized in the project are reward tags valued at $100 each. Anglers who capture banded fish are encouraged to retain the tag or band, then contact the TWRA fisheries division via the provided phone number listed on the tag.

During the contact, individuals who caught the fish will be required to provide certain details, including contact information (solely for reward purposes), the fish's ID number, a photo of the reward tag, capture date, capture method, approximate location, and whether the fish was harvested.

Although silver carp are predominantly found in the Kentucky Reservoir, reports suggest their presence upstream in the Tennessee River, with sightings recorded as far as the Cumberland River's Cordell Hull Dam. These carp pose a threat to native species by competing for resources and space.

Known for their tendency to leap up to eight feet out of the water when startled, silver carp, which can reach weights of up to 60 pounds, pose a danger to boaters and recreational users.

TWRA urges individuals who catch invasive carp in regions where they are not established to promptly ice or freeze the fish and notify them for further action, particularly in East Tennessee or other areas without known invasive carp populations.
