Maury County Fire Dept. Leads Successful Operation to Rescue Man Trapped by Landslide For 12 Hours

A backhoe operator was rescued following a 12-hour ordeal during a landslide incident in Lewis County on Tuesday night. The Maury County Fire Department dispatched assistance to the Hampshire Community after reports of a landslide involving a backhoe being completely buried under a collapsed face of a chert pit.

Upon arrival, responders discovered the trapped operator, who had been stuck for 12 hours but was able to communicate with them. Only his head and one arm were visible above the dirt, with a small portion of the backhoe's roof exposed. To provide fresh air, crews lowered a pipe down to the trapped operator's location.

Various heavy equipment, including a skid steer and backhoe from civilians, was brought to the scene to aid in the rescue effort. Crews utilized shovels and formed a "bucket brigade" to remove dirt from around the trapped backhoe.

Throughout the rescue operation, the operator received oxygen and specialized care due to the prolonged duration of being trapped. Once the dirt was cleared from the sides of the backhoe, the roof was cut off using a rotary saw while being supported with chains and lifted away.

After additional dirt removal by hand, the man was successfully extricated from the backhoe. He was then airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center by helicopter for further treatment.
