Super Tuesday Election Results For Maury County

Election season commenced with Super Tuesday shaping the landscape for the nation's potential next president and various local seats in Maury County. Maury County voters favored former Republican President Donald J. Trump and incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden in their respective party primaries.

Trump secured the Republican nomination with 9,557 votes, while Biden won the Democratic seat with 982 votes. Other Republican candidates, except Nikki Haley with 399 votes and Ron DeSantis with 23 votes (who dropped out in January), remained in the single digits.

Local Maury County races saw several uncontested contests, including multiple seats on the Maury County School Board and Circuit Court Judge for District 22. In the race for constable in District 7, Republican candidates Patrick Ryan and Mark Schmittou vied, with Ryan emerging as the victor with 318 votes over Schmittou's 298 votes.

Out of 71,853 registered Maury County voters, 6,806 participated on Tuesday, with 2,201 voting early and 145 via absentee ballots, totaling 9,242 votes, or roughly a 12.86% turnout. While low turnout is anticipated for a primary election, Maury County Administrator of Elections Chris Mackinlay deemed it a smooth election, crediting volunteers, election officers, and staff.

Tuesday's election marked the return of paper ballots, approved by the Maury County Commission in 2022. Mackinlay, overseeing his first Maury County election since becoming the county administrator last year, expressed optimism for the upcoming August primary and November General Election. He praised the teamwork of both Democrats and Republicans and expressed confidence in the election commission's readiness for future challenges.

Dean Curley Makes History: First Tennessee Freshman to Hit Three Homers in a Game

In Tuesday's matchup against Kansas State, Dean Curley played a pivotal role in breaking open the game for Tennessee baseball with a grand slam in the third inning. This marked the beginning of Curley's standout performance, as he went on to achieve a historic feat for a Tennessee freshman by hitting three homers in a single game.

Facing Kansas State (7-4) at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, Curley continued his impressive display, adding a three-run homer in the fourth inning and a two-run homer in the sixth. The eighth-ranked Tennessee (12-1) secured a decisive 15-5 victory against the Wildcats, with Curley contributing a remarkable nine RBIs throughout the game.

Curley's noteworthy achievements include hitting six homers among his first eight career hits, along with a triple and a single. Despite missing the start of the season due to a hamstring injury and sitting out a game after being hit in the head by a pitch against Albany on Feb. 25, the California freshman made his mark with his eighth start on Tuesday.

The Vols' offensive power extended beyond Curley, with Billy Amick hitting Tennessee's second homer in the third inning, complemented by a loaded bases scenario featuring a Kavares Tears single, Cannon Peebles walk, and Dylan Dreiling single. Curley once again showcased his prowess with a grand slam to left field, clearing the bases.

Evan Russell, who had two three-homer games in the 2021 season against LSU and Vanderbilt, remains the only player in Tennessee history with such a distinction. Other notable players in UT history with three-homer games include Alan Cockrell, Rusty Ensor, Todd Helton, and Cody Hawn.

Curley's outstanding performance continued as he homered to left after a Robin Villeneuve single and another Peebles walk, adding a three-run homer to his impressive tally. In the sixth inning, he further contributed with a homer to center, scoring Bradke Lohry.
