The Drake Breaks Ground: High-Rise Apartment Complex Reshapes Downtown Columbia's Horizon

Credit: Bristol Development Group
Construction is currently in progress in downtown Columbia, specifically along East 6th Street, where multiple projects are set to transform the area, including the city's first high-rise apartment complex, The Drake. The ongoing construction may cause some temporary inconvenience, but the completed projects aim to contribute to the flourishing downtown scene, featuring a mix of businesses, modern residential options, and historic preservation.
The Drake, a high-rise apartment complex managed by Franklin-based Bristol Development, is set to offer 293 rooms, a non-public parking garage, ground-level retail spaces, a courtyard, and various amenities. The project is expected to be completed by early 2026. Bristol Development has already acquired the property, submitted building and construction plans for review, and obtained a demo permit for site preparation and demolition.
The completion of The Drake, alongside other major projects like the Maury County Archives expansion, will reshape the landscape of downtown Columbia, creating a new and dynamic environment.
The Maury County Archives, undergoing construction adjacent to The Drake, has been expanding for nearly a year and is anticipated to conclude by the end of this year. The expansion will add 18,000 square feet to the existing 8,500-square foot facility, providing crucial space for preserving local documents, artifacts, and historical items.
Further down at the intersection of East 6th Street and North Main Street, additional projects are underway, including the construction of new restaurants and a butcher. Plans for a museum dedicated to the city's automotive history are also in the works.
The Drake apartments will encompass four stories, with an additional lower level acting as a basement, featuring one, two, and three-bedroom units. Alongside private garage parking, The Drake will offer amenities such as a courtyard with a pool, dog park, pet spa, bike lounge, fitness center, and a music/podcast studio. The facility will also include retail space along Woodland Street.
Bristol Development's Charles Carlisle highlighted the modern features of The Drake, catering to those seeking urban living without the responsibilities of home maintenance. The development will feature a co-working space resembling a coffee shop, available 24/7 for residents. Carlisle expressed his company's attraction to Columbia's thriving atmosphere, growth in small businesses and retail, and commitment to preserving its history. He sees The Drake as contributing to a new and exciting chapter in downtown Columbia's ongoing revitalization.
