Spring Hill Secures Prime Recreational Land in $3.6 Million Deal

The Spring Hill Board of Mayor and Aldermen has given its approval for an agreement to acquire property earmarked for future recreational use.
Under this agreement, the city is set to acquire 33.65 acres of land at 2841 Hurt Road in Williamson County for $3.6 million. Notably, the agreement includes a provision allowing the property seller, Danny C. Allen Trustee of the Danny C. Allen Trust, to name various elements of the park property, such as trails, paths, buildings, or amenities, in acknowledgment of the seller's family.
Alderman Brent Murray emphasized the recreational need for the property, stating its suitability for a variety of sports and activities. He highlighted that the Parks and Recreation department had been searching for such space for an extended period, and the proposed property could serve as a central location for fields, playgrounds, and park amenities.
Murray also noted that the city had allocated $1.5 million for park land acquisition, and the cost of the property presented an attractive opportunity to address the city's recreational needs.
City Administrator Pam Caskie mentioned that a due diligence period is outlined in the agreement, and the city has the necessary funds available for the purchase once the board completes the required amendments and transfers.
The board ultimately voted 8-1 in favor of the purchase agreement, with Alderman Kevin Gavigan casting the dissenting vote. Gavigan expressed concern about the purchase agreement being included as a consent item on the agenda, stating insufficient time for public discussion and board familiarization.
Kiwanis Club's 20th Annual Yard Sale Draws Enthusiastic Crowds

The Kiwanis Club of Columbia hosted its 20th annual Yard Sale at the Memorial Building, attracting over 800 eager visitors in search of unique and practical items. With more than a dozen tables laden with diverse items, the event generated excitement, drawing early morning crowds forming a line around the building an hour before the sale began.
The funds raised from the yard sale will contribute to supporting Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in Maury County, a cause long championed by the Kiwanis Club. Shoppers explored a wide array of treasures, from fine China and vintage cameras to a collection of rare literary works dating back to 1909. Volunteers worked diligently, packing volumes for preservation at the Maury County Archives.
The sale featured an extensive collection of furniture, including dining room sets, side tables, lamps, art, ornate picture frames, and glassware. Collectors snapped up Pyrex dishes, vintage Mason jars, and various silver homeware items.
Jan McKeel, chairperson of the Kiwanis Yard Sale, highlighted the crucial role of the Imagination Library in promoting literacy among children in Maury County. The nonprofit has distributed over 54,000 books annually to more than 21,575 children across the county. Over two decades, the Kiwanis Club has contributed over $72,000 to the Imagination Library, aiming to reach one million children in Maury County by 2027. Major sponsors include Maury Regional Group, General Motors Spring Hill, and various individual donors and churches. The Kiwanis Club remains dedicated to supporting literacy initiatives in the community.
