Firefighters Rescue Injured Worker After 20-Foot Fall at Santa Fe Unit School
From Maury County Fire Department’s post…
This morning at 09:24, the Maury County Fire Department was dispatched to 2629 Santa Fe Pike at Santa Fe Unit School for a person who had reportedly fallen and was seriously injured.
The first arriving unit found that a subcontractor working to install a new underground tank as part of the school’s septic system had fallen approximately 20 feet to the bottom of the tank.
Once this information was known the call was upgraded to a technical rescue which brought additional rope trained personnel and MCFD Truck 21 to the scene to assist with rescue efforts. Two MCFD Firefighters and a Maury Regional EMS Paramedic entered the concrete vault to provide patient care. Ventilation and air monitoring were initiated. The ladder truck was carefully maneuvered into place to set up an aerial high point. Members quickly rigged a rope system and lowered a stokes basket to rescuers in the hole. The patient was secured in the basket and successfully raised out of the hole and transferred to Maury EMS and Vanderbilt Lifeflight personnel. The patient was airlifted from the scene to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Special thanks to Columbia Power and Water for a prompt response to shut down overhead power lines in the event our aerial had to maneuver close to them.
We would like to credit the hard work of our Special Operations Division over the past several years who continuously provide training to our members to ensure they are prepared for responses such as this.
Agencies on scene/assisting:
Maury County 911, Maury Regional Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Maury County Office Of Emergency Management, Vanderbilt LifeFlight, Columbia Power & Water Systems
