Catch the Perseid Meteor Shower: Best Viewing Tips and Peak Dates

Every summer, Earth encounters a cloud of space debris, resulting in a spectacular meteor shower. This year's Perseid Meteor Shower is in full swing, visible until the end of August. Originating from the comet Swift-Tuttle, which last approached Earth in 1992, the shower is one of the most prolific celestial displays, providing an awe-inspiring sight.

The Perseids are tiny fragments, often no larger than a grain of sand, traveling at a staggering 133,200 miles per hour when they hit Earth's atmosphere, where they can reach temperatures exceeding 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The shower is active from mid-July through early September, with the peak occurring on the night of August 12th into the morning of August 13th.

During the peak, viewers can expect up to 100 meteors per hour. The best viewing time is after midnight, when the moon, half full, sets and the sky becomes darker. The meteors are most visible in the pre-dawn hours and are easily seen without any special equipment. Stargazers are advised to find a location away from city lights and allow their eyes to adjust to the darkness for the best experience.

Tennessee offers several ideal spots with minimal light pollution to enjoy this celestial event. No need for binoculars or telescopes—just a clear night and a bit of patience will reward viewers with an unforgettable display.
